Venting Systems-Tools-Fireplace Doors

General
Besides providing top quality hearth appliances we carry most common hearth accessories too. Additionally, we stock the most common parts needed for hearth appliances we sell. Examples of these common parts include switches, rheostats, remote controls, pilot assemblies and blowers.

Sometimes our customer’s do not want or need an appliance at all. Leisure World Pool and Hearth can still help improve the look and efficiency of a fireplace by adding a designer fireplace door. Or, if you simply need a standard fireplace related accessory or part we always carry these common items:

Many commonly needed accessories have a multitude of style and size options and consequently we cannot stock them all and therefore order as needed. Typically we do have displays, demos, and limited quantities of such items to view that include:

Venting
Venting a high quality hearth appliance requires a properly planned and executed installation coupled with a high quality vent system. All appliances have a very specific set of technical guidelines that must be followed during installation. This includes, but is not limited to, clearance to combustible information and venting guidelines such as the proper type of vent to be used and how it can be run. Every appliance is unique in this regard and must be treated as such; this is why we mandate on site evaluations for units we are installing and encourage the same for even those installing themselves.

Technical Sidebar—Wood Burning Appliance Venting
Though quality installation and venting components are important for all hearth appliances, wood burning applications place a premium on components and installation more so than do other fuel types. Today’s high efficiency wood burning products are much different than stoves predating the E.P.A.s minimum efficiency standards that were mandated in the 1980’s. Modern stoves are designed to retain as much heat as possible in the firebox without letting it escape up the flue—hence the high efficiency. The downside to this is that a lack of flue temperature is counterproductive to producing good draft. Therefore, more efficient stoves and inserts place a premium on the venting system as they must retain the relatively small amount of heat present to ensure proper draft. This is why high efficiency wood burning hearth appliances use insulated chimneys rather than air-cooled chimneys like open wood burning fireplaces do. Air-cooled chimneys are quite safe when it comes to exterior clearances to combustibles, but this comes at the expense of also cooling the interior flue. Insulated systems retain heat internally and do not let the heat transfer to the exterior layer thus also allowing minimal exterior clearances to combustibles.

On a related topic, the above concepts are true for wood burning inserts as well. Though not mandated by code in many areas, Leisure World Pool and Hearth always installs the same diameter chimney liner as what is present on the insert from top to bottom. In addition to the added peace of mind that a fully lined chimney creates, the primary reason for doing this is to maximize the potential for the insert to draft and work properly—although sometimes unique wind conditions can hinder even the most textbook installations at which time specialty components such as flue extensions and high wind termination caps can be added to overcome the problem. Normally however, by simply reducing the flue volume to the appropriate size by adding a liner, the limited flue heat produced by the insert can focus on heating a 6” or 8” column of air to create draft rather than a cavernous 12” or larger clay flue tile. To assist draft further as inserts become more and more efficient, we are more commonly wrapping chimney liners with an insulating blanket. This practice is commonplace in northern regions of the U.S. and in Canada—but the bottom line is that to satisfy or exceed every code and listing and to guarantee the best performance from your insert, an insulated liner is the best way to go.

Chimney and venting systems that we commonly use are as follows:

  • Security Chimneys International (Laval, Canada)—Our premier supplier of premium wood, gas, and pellet venting and associated components. Common types of Security pipe we use include:
    • 6” and 8” double wall air-cooled chimney connector (Type DL)
    • 6” and 8” double wall insulated chimney (Type ASHT)—must be used with all IHP and Security high efficiency wood fireplaces
    • 6” and 8” rigid stainless steel chimney liner (Tubinox)
    • All diameters of direct vent gas vent (Secure Vent)—must be used with IHP gas fireplaces
  • Olympia Chimney Supply (Pennsylvania)—Our premier supplier of premium wood chimney liners, insulation and single wall black chimney connector.
  • Selkirk (Selkirk, Canada)—Manufacturers of all types of venting and components; we primarily use Selkirk 4” x 6 5/8” direct-vent gas pipe when possible
  • Simpson Dura-Vent (Vacaville, CA)—The world’s largest manufacturer of venting products; many gas appliance manufacturers mandate the use of Dura-Vent components. We primarily use Dura-Vent for specific gas fireplaces and inserts.
  • ICC Excel Chimney (St. Jerome, Canada)—Likely the finest wood burning chimney systems available—must be used with RSF and Renaissance wood burning fireplaces
  • Magnaflex (Mt. Sterling, Ky)—Manufacturers of the first double wall insulated chimney liner on the market

Mantels
Many manufacturers including IHP, American Hearth, and Monessen make mantels to fit select fireplaces.  If there is a need for something custom or non combustible, a few manufacturer we work with can assist with your project.  Stoll fireplace, our fireplace door manufacturer, does a great job with custom non combustible mantels, hoods.

Fireplace Doors
Admittedly, our primary objective is to put some kind of high efficiency hearth appliance in a fireplace. If that is not your desire or you would like to update your fireplace with a new gas log set and a sleek new set of fireplace doors, we can help with this too! For more traditional designs to fit relatively “normal” fireplaces, we offer two value leading door lines from Hearthcraft, and Residential Retreat. These strictly “stock” doors will fit a range of opening heights and widths and will overlap the opening slightly. Simply provide us with a width and height dimension of your fireplace opening and we can take it from there.

Also making a reasonably priced line of stock doors with more of an emphasis on custom interior fit doors is Thermo-Rite.
