GAS LOGS-INSERTS-FIREPLACES-STOVES
General
Leisure World Pool and Hearth sells and installs many different gas burning products including gas logs, fireplace inserts, complete fireplaces and stoves along with the appropriate venting systems if applicable. All of the brands we represent have been carefully selected and researched in order to provide our customers with a variety of efficient, reliable products at a great value. Additionally, our product offerings are constantly evolving to keep up with the constantly changing demands
of our customers. Most importantly, dealing with a variety of manufacturers and product types allows us to recommend the best product for the application as not all companies have a product for every need. Aside from assisting in selecting the right unit for your unique situation, much of the value we provide is our unmatched technical expertise and in-house, turn-key installations. Having an NFI certified Master Hearth Professional conduct on-site evaluations in order to properly plan the
job and estimate it to the penny ahead of time differentiates us from the competition. After all, the best products are average or worse if not installed correctly.
Leisure World Pool and Hearth specializes in high efficiency gas burning heating appliances as opposed to inefficient “builder” grade fireplaces that are commonly found in newer homes. In fact, many homeowners come to us looking to upgrade their unsightly, inefficient builder fireplace to something heat producing. This common scenario can be approached in a number of ways including the installation of a small insert or ripping out the fireplace and chimney and replacing it entirely with a high efficiency Mendota fireplace.
Gas Logs and Log Alternatives
The traditional “hold your breath and light” gas logs are a thing of the past. All of Leisure World’s gas logs and log alternatives include a standard safety pilot and are generally accompanied by a remote control to activate the burner to eliminate the need to reach into the fireplace at all. Today’s gas logs come in a wide variety of styles and types. Here is a rundown of the three major gas log categories:
Vented: Hargrove, Rasmussen, Monessen—A traditional vented log set focuses on big flame and realistic burn. Vented sets generally utilize some kind of pan burner filled with a media such as sand to distribute the gas evenly which leads to a rich, sooty orange flame very similar in appearance to a real wood fire. These sets are available in all sizes including large sizes upwards of 60”. Though the burners are not state of the art in terms of combustion efficiency, they do produce state of the art looks and convenience when used with a remote control. Vented sets are available in traditional log looks or alternatives such as Rasmussen’s Fire Glitter, Fire Shapes, and Fire Balls. Vented can only be installed in properly functioning wood burning fireplaces with the damper completely open. Overall heating efficiency is poor.
Vent-free: Monessen, Buck, Hargrove, Rasmussen—Vent-free gas logs and alternatives are among most efficient hearth products available and produce a tremendous amount of usable heat. The burners differ significantly from their vented counterparts. To achieve the nearly perfect (99.9%) combustion efficiency, vent-free burners are extremely precise in how they mix fuel and air—after all the harmful byproduct associated with combustion, carbon monoxide (CO), is made up of unburned fuel particles created from incomplete combustion. By achieving this exceptionally high level of efficiency the damper of the fireplace can safely be left closed allowing all the heat to travel into the room. With this extreme efficiency comes a few important items to be aware of:
- Flame realism, though exceptional on some Monessen units, is not akin to a vented log set.
- Vent-free gas logs should not be installed into a prefabricated fireplace to be used in a vent-free configuration—in other words the damper would have to be open as these fireplaces are generally not tested or listed to be used with vent-free gas logs.
- Vent-free gas logs are a supplemental heat source only and should NOT be used as a sole heat source as a byproduct of gas combustion is water vapor. In an extreme situation in a very airtight home the elevated moisture content could cause mold.
- Vent-free gas logs cannot be installed in a confined space. It is up to the job planner to distinguish an acceptable space versus a confined space.
- Vent-free gas logs cannot exceed 10,000 BTU’s in a bedroom.
- Vent-free gas logs can emit nuisance odors as a result of dust or other foreign debris interfering with the burner; other sources of air quality problems in a home (cigarette smoke, sheetrock dust, etc.) can also create nuisance odors. We suggest cleaning the logs and burner every year just prior to the heating season to reduce the presence of nuisance odors.
If a vent-free appliance is planned, installed, and used correctly there is no better bang for your buck in terms heat vs. cost. Vent-free gas logs are not suitable for every situation, however. They are best installed in older homes with large, open areas needing supplemental heat. Your Leisure World Pool and Hearth professional can help you plan accordingly. Many *Burning Showroom Displays*Reduced Vent: Monessen—The Duzy series from Monessen is a mid-efficient vented log set that we prefer over the fully vented alternative. These sets consume less gas than the “pan” burner and do not require the damper to be wide open in all cases. This leads to more radiant heat. Additionally, these stainless steel burners come standard with a millivolt gas valve that is remote ready. Duzy 5--*Burning Showroom Display*
Fireplace Inserts</.P>
Direct Vent Inserts: Mendota, Monessen, Jotul, Lennox, Hearthstone—Adding a gas fireplace insert is an amazing way to transform your fireplace into something useful and beautiful. Here is a brief technical description on what a direct vent insert is and how it works: The term “direct vent” refers to a venting configuration that intakes fresh air and exhausts combustion byproducts entirely to the outside. These units all have glass fronts and are therefore sealed in relation to the home’s interior air. They do not interplay with the home’s air quality whatsoever. Though gas inserts are not designed to be a sole heating source, theoretically one could run 24/7 without compromising interior air quality. Blowers, heat exchangers, and ceramic glass are integral parts of how these units transfer and convect heat into the home.
