Electric fireplaces are quickly gaining popularity with interested hearth customers. If heat is not a priority but you want to achieve a cozy look then an electric hearth product is for you. They come in a variety of styles like other more traditional fuel types but require nothing more than a standard wall outlet to operate. No venting, no fuss. In most cases these units will produce about 5000 BTU’s of heat. To put that in perspective, that is similar to a hair dryer running on high. Unlike some TV ad’s might lead one to believe, this type of heater is not miraculous and will not heat your home—rather they are intended to add a small amount of supplemental heat to your room while displaying a very realistic “flame” appearance created by the manipulation of light. The heat can be turned on and off and can be modulated as can the “speed” of the flames. The heat is produced from a small coil mounted in conjunction with a blower fan.
